Emerging Technologies and Mobile App Development
Romolo Velati, Head of Software Development, Italiaonline
When I first entered Italiaonline in the late 2017, mobile performance wasn’t so fast as a mobile user and Google wanted. Faster mobile performance was the need of the hour. The immediate task that I had in front of me was to rein in on the problems and improve customer experience. It goes without saying that mobile performance matters very much in today’s digital age. When designing a mobile interface, one factor should be kept in mind—the result should always be high in terms of performance. For instance, Google is now setting what the perception of slow is. Even less than one second is long enough for users to close the search activity. At Italiaonline, we started with a project to improve speed on every page of the network. Fortunately, the marketing team embraced this vision. As a matter of fact, if marketing teams do not understand the vision of the leadership, it gets challenging to bring a project to match in terms of design or graphics. Additionally, one of the primary conditions to start with a project is to create the right culture within the developer team. That said, when we started with the project, it began with tool presentation, research, meeting CDN providers, and Google engineers—all of these factors created a culture.
The second step was to introduce the tool and measure the speed. It is essential to measure the speed to track mobile performance. We began with the voiceover in 2019. It is important to understand the behavior of the website, its images and videos. The developers should understand the network connections, as well. First, it is crucial to understand if a site is well enough in its architecture. We have found a lot of metrics, and we upgraded from the first protocol, HTTP, to HTTPS to HTTP2. Now, the standards fit the necessity of the speed in connections. Second, the market demands a tool that understands the different types of caches and engaging front-end in mobile app delivery.
Use of the Latest Technology for Productive Web Traffic
For great user experience, we use AMP (Accelerated mobile pages) and in the composition of the mobile pages machine learning, which is important to understand an app’s next page that a user usually wants to know. We can, thus, create an environment where the entire index and the navigation map are stored. With machine learning, we can predict functional profiling for the user on the next pages. And, if that connection is wide enough, we can start loading the pages. Throughout our technology, we insert steps to check mobile performance in the continuous delivery pipeline integration. In terms of security, we continuously check the performance of mobile apps and follow the next steps, as well.
When you design a new user interface in a mobile application, it is necessary to focus on its performance for better customer experience
Moreover, performance tuning in mobile is a way to increase traffic, but you have to focus on the composition of the pages. To improve SEO of a mobile app and its presence in the webstore, content and technology enhancements are very important.
Advice to New-Age Entrepreneurs
My advice to today’s entrepreneurs and startups is to enhance their efficiency and productivity by having the right mobile applications for the end-users. When you design a new user interface in a mobile application, it is necessary to focus on its performance for a better customer experience. Customers usually prefer content speed and understandable graphics, and developers must keep this point in mind while designing a solution. It is also important to compress and optimize all the necessary content of the webpages in the app to stay ahead of competitors.
When you lose an app user due to low performance, you lose a customer, which automatically affects your business and transactions. So the young and enthusiastic entrepreneurs must develop apps that are useful to the end-users.
